1. Introduction — Pray as the Prophet ﷺ Prayed

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Pray as you have seen me praying.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 631)

This article teaches the exact practical method of Salah according to Rasulullah ﷺ based strictly on authentic (Sahih) ahadith, fully referenced.


2. The Only Authentic Sunnah Method of Salah

(Based Entirely on Sahih Ahadith)

Below is the step-by-step description of how the Prophet ﷺ prayed.
Every point includes:

  • English explanation

3. Standing for Salah (Qiyam) & Intention

English Explanation:

Before starting prayer, the Prophet ﷺ stood facing the Qiblah, raised his hands and said Allahu Akbar. This marked the beginning of the prayer.

Urdu (Original Text):

نبی کریم ﷺ نماز کے لیے کھڑے ہوتے، قبلہ رخ ہوتے، ہاتھ اٹھاتے اور تکبیر کہتے۔

Hadith:

نبی ﷺ رفع یدین کرتے ہوئے “اللہ اکبر” کہتے تھے۔

Note:

  • ہاتھ کانوں تک یا کندھوں تک اٹھائے جاتے تھے، دونوں صحیح ہیں۔

4. Position of Hands in Qiyam

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ placed his right hand over his left-hand during standing. Authentic narrations support both positions: on the chest or slightly below.

Urdu (Original Text):

آپ ﷺ نے اپنا دایاں ہاتھ بائیں ہاتھ پر رکھا۔

Hadith:

(Sahih Bukhari 740 , Sahih Muslim: 896, 867, Jamia Tirmidhi: 255, 256)

Note:

  • سینے پر ہاتھ باندھنے کی روایت بھی صحیح ہے۔
    (Sunan Nasai: 879, 890 , Abu Dawud: 727)


5. Opening Supplication (Dua al-Istiftah)

English Explanation:

After Takbeer, the Prophet ﷺ recited a short opening dua before Surah al-Fatiha.

Arabic Text:

اللّٰهُمَّ بَاعِدْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ خَطَايَايَ...

Hadith:

(Sahih Bukhari: 744, Sahih Muslim: 868)


6. Seeking Protection & Bismillah

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ recited A‘ūdhu billāhi and Bismillāh before starting Surah al-Fātiha.

Hadith:

(Sunan Nasai: 906)


7. Reciting Surah al-Fātiha

English Explanation:

Surah al-Fatiha is mandatory in every rak’ah.

Hadith:

“The prayer of the one who does not recite Fatiha is incomplete.”

9. The Importance of Humility & Stillness in Salah

English Explanation:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ instructed worshippers to stand with full calmness, humility, and focus. Salah without khushu‘ (inner concentration) becomes weak, even if technically valid.

رسول اللہ ﷺ نماز ایسے پڑھتے کہ آپ کی نظر سجدہ گاہ پر ہوتی، خشوع و خضوع کے ساتھ پورے اطمینان سے قیام فرماتے۔


10. Raising Hands Before Rukū‘ and After Rising

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ performed Raf‘ al-Yadayn (raising hands) at key points in Salah:

  • At the start of prayer (Takbīratul Ihrām)

  • Before going into Rukū‘

  • After rising from Rukū‘

  • Sometimes upon standing after Tashahhud (third rak’ah)

آپ ﷺ رکوع سے پہلے، رکوع سے اٹھتے وقت ہاتھ اٹھاتے۔

11. Voice & Tone During Recitation

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ recited aloud in Fajr, Maghrib, and ‘Isha; while Zuhr and Asr were recited silently. His recitation was clear, measured, and melodious.

Urdu Text:

نبی کریم ﷺ کی قرأت ترتیل اور ٹھہر ٹھہر کر ہوتی تھی۔

Sunnahs of Qiyām (Standing Position)

(1) Facing the Qiblah Firmly

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ stood straight, facing the Qiblah with full focus.

(2) Eyes Fixed on the Place of Prostration

English Explanation:

He did not look around. The gaze remained lowered toward the spot of Sujūd.

آپ ﷺ دایاں ہاتھ بائیں ہاتھ پر رکھتے تھے، کبھی سینے پر، کبھی ناف کے اوپر۔

(4) Opening Supplication (Dua of Istiftah)

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَىٰ جَدُّكَ، وَلَا إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ

(5) Seeking Protection — Taawwudh

English Explanation:

After opening dua, the Prophet ﷺ said:

أَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

(6) Reciting “Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim”

English Explanation:

He recited Bismillah before Surah Fatihah.

11. Hands on Knees, Back Straight

English Explanation:

In Rukū‘, the Prophet ﷺ:

  • Spread his back straight

  • Held his knees firmly with his hands

  • Kept his head level (not raised, not lowered)

Urdu Text:

آپ ﷺ رکوع میں پیٹھ سیدھی رکھتے، دونوں ہاتھ گھٹنوں پر مضبوطی سے رکھتے، سر نہ اونچا کرتے نہ نیچا۔

12. Dhikr of Ruku

English Explanation:

He recited multiple adhkār in Rukū‘. Most frequent:

Arabic Text:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ
(“Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great”)

14. Rising from Ruku

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ stood up straight after bowing, raising his hands and saying:

Arabic Text:

سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ
(“Allah hears the one who praises Him”)

15. The Prophet’s Dhikr While Standing

English Explanation:

While fully upright, he said:

Arabic Text:

رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ
(“Our Lord, for You is all praise”)

  1. رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ

  2. اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ

  3. اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ

Standing fully straight before going to Sujūd is obligatory.


SUNNAHS OF SUJUD (Prostration)


16. Going into Sujud

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ said Allāhu Akbar and went into Sujūd with gentleness.

17. Seven Body Parts Used in Sujūd

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ placed:

  1. Forehead

  2. Nose

  3. Both palms

  4. Both knees

  5. Toes of both feet

All seven on the ground.

Urdu Text:

سات اعضاء زمین پر رکھتے: پیشانی، ناک، دونوں ہاتھ، دونوں گھٹنے، دونوں پاؤں کی انگلیاں۔

18. Dhikr in Sujūd

Most Common Dhikr:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَىٰ
(Sahih Muslim: 738)

  • اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ

  • اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ سَجَدْتُ

19. Prohibition: Elbows Not Spread like a Dog

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ commanded that elbows be lifted away from the ground.

SUNNAHS OF JALSAH (Sitting Between the Two Sujūd)

20. Sitting Calmly Between Two Prostrations

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ sat with full calmness between the two Sujūd and recited specific duas.

آپ ﷺ دو سجدوں کے درمیان پورے اطمینان کے ساتھ بیٹھتے تھے۔

21. Supplication Between the Two Sujūd

Arabic Text (Masnoon Dua):

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي، رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي

SUNNAHS OF TASHahHUD (At-Tahiyyāt Sitting)

22. Sitting for Tashahhud

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ sat in Iftirāsh position during the first Tashahhud and in Tawarruk during the last Tashahhud (for prayers with more than two rak‘ahs).

Urdu Text:

آپ ﷺ پہلی تشہد میں افتراش اور آخری تشہد میں تورک کرتے تھے۔

23. The Tashahhud (Attahiyyāt) Text

Arabic Text:

التَّحِيَّاتُ لِلّٰهِ، وَالصَّلَوَاتُ، وَالطَّيِّبَاتُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ، السَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَىٰ عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ الصَّالِحِينَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

SUNNAHS OF SENDING SALAWAT ON THE PROPHET ﷺ

24. The Durood (Salat Alan-Nabi)

Arabic Text (Durood Ibrahim):

اللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ. اللّٰهُمَّ بَارِكْ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

SUNNAHS OF MASNOON DUAS BEFORE SALAM

25. Dua After Tashahhud and Before Ending the Prayer

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ taught many duas to be read after Durood and before Salam.

Arabic Text:

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَمِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ

SUNNAHS OF TASLĪM (Ending the Prayer)

26. Salam to End the Salah

English Explanation:

The Prophet ﷺ ended his prayer by turning his head to the right and left, saying:

Arabic Text:

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ

Urdu Text:

دائیں طرف سلام پھیرتے، پھر بائیں طرف۔

FINAL ADVICE FROM THE PROPHET ﷺ ABOUT SALAH

27. Praying with Tranquility

English Explanation:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“A person only gets from prayer the portion he performs with focus.”

Urdu Text:

نماز میں انسان کو صرف وہی حصہ ملتا ہے جو خشوع اور دھیان سے ادا کرے۔

Hadith References:

  • Musnad Ahmad: 18215

  • Ibn Hibban: 1890



رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا

“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
(Qur’an 20:114)

اَللّٰهُمَّ أَرِنَا الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَارْزُقْنَا اتِّبَاعَهُ،
وَأَرِنَا الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلًا وَارْزُقْنَا اجْتِنَابَهُ،
وَلَا تَجْعَلْهُ مُلْتَبِسًا عَلَيْنَا فَنَضِلَّ

“O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it. Show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the ability to avoid it. Do not make it unclear to us, lest we go astray.”

اللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا مِنَ الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ كَمَا أَمَرْتَ،
وَكَمَا صَلَّى نَبِيُّنَا مُحَمَّدٌ ﷺ
وَارْزُقْنَا الْخُشُوعَ وَالْإِخْلَاصَ فِي الْعِبَادَةِ.
