Iman wa Tazeem – Believing in the Qur’an’s Divine Origin & Honouring It
Iman wa Ta‘zeem
(Belief in the Divine Origin of the Qur’an and an Attitude of Reverence Towards It)
Introduction
Every Muslim claims to believe in the Qur’an — but how deep is this belief? Is it only a statement of the tongue, or is it a conviction of the heart that shapes life? This article explores Iman wa Ta‘zeem — the first and foremost duty we owe to the Qur’an — supported by Qur’an and Sunnah.
What is Iman?
In the Qur’an, “Iman” means faith in spiritual truths. True faith has two essential components:
- Iqrār bil-lisān – Declaring belief with the tongue.
- Tasdeeq bil-qalb – Firm affirmation in the heart.
Without heartfelt conviction, verbal statements are hollow.
Belief in the Qur’an
Believing in the Qur’an means absolute certainty that it is:
- The Speech of Allah
- Revealed through Angel Jibreel (AS)
- Sent to the final Messenger Muhammad ﷺ
This belief naturally produces love, respect, and spiritual attachment.
"The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers."
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285)
The Prophet ﷺ’s Reverence for the Qur’an
When revelation paused temporarily, the Prophet ﷺ felt deep sadness until Allah reassured him:
"Do not hasten with the Qur’an before its revelation is completed to you."
(Surah Taha 20:114)
"Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it."
(Surah Al-Qiyamah 75:16)
He would spend long nights in prayer, reciting the Qur’an until his blessed feet became swollen. The Sahabah would listen with tears streaming down their cheeks, some completing the entire Qur’an in a week.
The Problem Today – Faith Without Depth
Today, many declare belief in the Qur’an verbally, but their hearts lack connection. Allah warns:
"Indeed, those who were given the Scripture after clear proofs came to them differed among themselves…" (Surah Ash-Shura 42:14)
Without the light of faith, respect, understanding, and practice weaken.
How to Strengthen Faith in the Qur’an
- Keep the company of the righteous — The Sahabah gained spiritual light from the Prophet ﷺ.
- Study the Seerah and the lives of the Sahabah.
- Reflect deeply on the Qur’an:
"And it is a reminder for every servant who turns to Allah."
(Surah Qaf 50:8)
Cleansing the Heart for Faith
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"These hearts rust just like iron rusts when water affects it."
They asked, “What will clean them?”
He ﷺ replied:
"Reciting the Qur’an and remembering death frequently."
(Al-Bayhaqi)
Final Reflection
Without heartfelt conviction, verbal faith is hollow. When the Qur’an becomes the nourishment of the soul, life transforms.
Abu Bakr (RA) said:
"The recognition of one’s inability to fully comprehend Allah’s reality is itself true understanding."
Ali (RA) said:
"Thinking deeply about the essence of Allah may lead to destruction, so focus on His signs instead."
Call to Action:
Let us renew our faith, deepen our connection with the Qur’an, and give it the respect it deserves — not just in words, but in our hearts and actions.
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
“My Lord, increase me in knowledge.”
(Qur’an 20:114)
“O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it. Show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the ability to avoid it. Do not make it unclear to us, lest we go astray.”
